Prinses Máxima at the Green Fashion Competition

Last night H.R.H. Princess Máxima of the Netherlands was at the final of the Green Fashion Competition at the Amsterdam Fashion Week in the Westergasfabriek.

The guests and dignitaries were seated by the ushers of the Protocolbureau.

The Green Fashion Competition is a competition for entrepreneurs in the fashion industry, for individuals (and teams) with a vision of what the future of fashion should look like. The aim of the competition is to find the talented entrepreneurs in the industry who aim to create a fashion business while sustaining biodiversity.

Maandag 12 december jongstleden was het Protocolbureau op Paleis Het Loo voor het jaarlijkse wintergala van Fonds Slachtofferhulp. Fonds Slachtofferhulp zet zich in voor slachtoffers van een misdrijf, verkeersongeval of ramp binnen Nederland.
Het gala heeft een prachtige opbrengst van € 173.250,- opgeleverd. De opbrengst komt volledig ten goede aan de doelstellingen van het Fonds Slachtofferhulp.

Voorzitter van het Fonds, prof. mr. Pieter van Vollenhoven, vroeg in het kosteloos ter beschikking gestelde Paleis het Loo, extra aandacht voor het werk van het Fonds Slachtofferhulp en stond stil bij de noodzaak van slachtofferhulpverlening en het (voorkomen van) slachtofferschap in Nederland.

Het Fonds schakelt het Protocolbureau in om te ondersteunen tijdens de ontvangst, seating en uitgeleide van de genodigden. Het Protocolbureau is sponsor van Fonds Slachtofferhulp.

Who is 'Fonds Slachtofferhulp'?

Every year one out of every four people in the Netherlands is the victim of a crime. In addition to this, there are 720 road traffic fatalities, and another 100,000 people are injured in traffic accidents.
Fonds Slachtofferhulp supports those whose homes have been broken into, those who have been involved in an accident, victims of human trafficking, the dependents of murder victims and victims of sexual abuse and victims of domestic violence.
Since it was set up in 1989 the Dutch Victim Support Fund has embraced the philosophy that ‘If a member of society is harmed, it is only right that the same society should extend a helping hand.’ And it has translated this philosophy into practical action by financing the provision of voluntary assistance throughout the Netherlands and offering victims emotional, practical and legal support.

Yesterday, the new ushers of the Protocolbureau were officially inaugurated at Van Prinse & Co in The Hague.
This event was the end of the first season of VIPS, the new training programme for the ushers of the Protocolbureau. The programme consisted of trainings, excursions, written exams and appraisals, all related to the work of the ushers for the Protocolbureau.

Ten years ago VIPS started as a master project of Wytze van der Gaast, at that time a student at the hotelschool The Hague. VIPS is the abbreviation for 'vaardigheden, interactie, protocol & stijl', translated as 'skills, interaction, protocol and style'.
In september of this year, the old training programme was replaced by VIPS.

For students, the VIPS programme of the Protocolbureau is a unique practical and theoretical experience in relationship management and protocol.
The trainings are given by the former Master of Ceremonies of H.M. the Queen Gilbert Monod de Froideville, etiquette expert Jan Jaap van Weering and the director of the Protocolbureau Jean Paul Wyers. The excursions went to the International Criminal Court in The Hague and the European Parliament in Brussels. For the appraisals, the assignors and directors of the Protocolbureau were being asked to assess the ushers on their working experience.
The ushers were also involved in the recruitment and selection process of new ushers. And during the appraisals the ushers had to show their theoretical knowledge by creating a case (written exam).

For the students there are 3 levels to be obtained, depending on the level of theoretical knowledge and working experience. New students start as 'host'. After gaining more experience the hosts are awarded the title of 'usher'. And only the very best grow further and obtain the honorable title of 'Senior Partner'.
Yesterday, the Protocolbureau welcomed 5 new hosts: Sam Doets, Simon Langeveld, Ruben Nederpel, Jurjen Peeters en Pepijn Plaisier. And we inaugurated 1 new usher (Jaap van Berkel) and 2 new Senior Partners (Wesley Toelen and Job van Welie).

The Institute of Protocol The Hague & the Protocolbureau in The Hague were the organisers of a Protocol Seminar on Relationship management at the Prinses Julianakazerne in The Hague on Monday 10 October 2011.
The seminar was organised on the occasion of the visit of Ms Pamela Eyring, President and Director of The Protocol School of Washington, to the Netherlands.
Following Ms Eyring's lecture, former Ambassador Eric Niehe and Mr Jan Bout, former CEO of Royal Haskoning discussed the merits of protocol and relationship management. Protocol specialist Major Hans van Reenen concluded the seminar with a lecture about 'the Public Interest of Military Ceremonies'.
The Institute of Protocol The Hague and the Protocolbureau were honored with the presence of the Ambassadors to the Netherlands, Dutch protocol experts, event management and communication specialists on 10 October 2011.

The National Delta Conference on the Delta Plan
The aim of the new-style Delta Plan (the Delta Works of the future) is to protect the Netherlands form high water and secure its freshwater supply, for today and the future. Many aspects play a role in this, ranging from the living environment and the economy to nature, agriculture and recreation. The Netherlands is a low-lying, prosperous and densely populated delta that is vulnerable to flooding. The 2-day protocol course of the Institute of Protocol The Hague started today. Part of this course is an etiquette dinner given by etiquette expert Jan Jaap van Weering.
The course stared with a training in protocol by Gilbert Monod de Froideville, former Master of Ceremonies of H.M. the Queen. Stage director Rebecca van Leeuwen trained the participants in posture, voice control, facial expression and non-verbal communication.
Day 2 will be about the ceremonials aspects of protocol and relationship management.
This course is given in Dutch.

Het 'Protocol Seminar on Relationship Management' op 10 oktober 2011 was een initiatief van het Protocolbureau uit Den Haag en Gilbert Monod de Froideville, oud-Ceremoniemeester van H.M. de Koningin.
Het Protocolbureau is in 1996 opgericht door studenten van de hotelschool Den Haag na een lezing over protocol van deze oud-Ceremoniemeester.
Het Protocolbureau wordt met zijn ushers ondermeer jaarlijks ingezet tijdens de award-ceremonie van World Press Photo, de Koning Willem I Prijs en tijdens de uitreiking van de Franklin D. Roosvelt Four Freedoms Awards. De oud-Ceremoniemeester schakelde de ushers destijds in tijdens het Koninklijk Huwelijken en de Staatsbegrafenissen.

Het Protocolseminar was bedoeld om het belang van relatiemanagement onder de aandacht te brengen. Modern protocol is daarvan de basis. Protocol wordt nog wel eens gezien als onnodig formeel, maar het is in feite het in goede banen leiden van een zakelijke ontmoeting (relatiemanagement). Dit wordt overal toegepast; bij een gemeente, een ministerie, een bank, een modeshow en zelfs op een dance-event.
Modern protocol is op dit moment 'booming business'.

Het Protocolseminar vandaag werd bezocht door vrijwel iedere Nederlandse protocol expert: De protocolchefs de Commandanten der Strijdkrachten, de Ridderzaal, de Nederlandse Ministers, het Corps Diplomatique, de Burgemeesters van de grote steden, Instituut Clingendael, de Provincies, ABN AMRO Bank, de Nederlandse Spoorwegen, Schiphol, KLM en vele anderen. En door etiquette expert Reinildis van Ditzhuyzen (schrijfster van vele boeken waaronder "Hoe hoort het eigenlijk?'), protocol expert Henrik de Groot (schrijver van het enige Nederlandse boek over protocol), Nanhya van Voorst tot Voorst (EETiquette), Jan Jaap van Weering (Distinguished), Roel Wolbrink (het Blauwe Boekje) en William Hanson (uit Manchester UK).
Ook alle huidige en oud-ushers van het Protocolbureau waren aanwezig.

Eregast en hoofdspreker was mevrouw Pamela Eyring, President-directeur van 's-werelds oudste (24 jaar) en grootste protocolschool, The Protocol School of Washington (PSOW). Tevens de enige geaccrediteerde protocolschool in de Verenigde Staten van America. Vrijwel iedere Amerikaanse protocolexpert is door de PSOW getraind.
De PSOW opereert in de VS maar ook in Afrika, het Midden-Oosten en in Europa.
Het Protocolbureau en de PSOW gaan in Europa samenwerken.

Na de lecture van mevrouw Eyring vond een paneldiscussie plaats met ondermeer oud-Ambassadeur (in Ierland, Hongarije en India) Eric Niehe en oud-CEO (van Royal Haskoning) Jan Bout. Majoor Hans van Reenen sloot af met een lezing over 'the public interest of ceremonies'.

Ms Pamela Eyring,
President & Director of The Protocol School of Washington
Pamela Eyring is the President and Director of The Protocol School of Washington, the only nationally accredited business etiquette, image and international protocol school in the United States of America. Formerly the Chief of Protocol at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, (and the first civilian to hold the post), Ms Eyring planned and directed military, government, international and civic ceremonies, conferences, special events and Presidential visits. She was also the Executive Development Program Manager for the Education and Training Branch of Headquarters Personnel.
Ms. Eyring has presented seminars and briefings to international corporate and government executives. She was named Washington Business Journal's first monthly Biz Etiquette columnist. In 2010, Ms. Eyring was approached by Reuters Global to write regular Modern Business Etiquette columns.
Ms. Eyring is an active member of Protocol and Diplomacy International - Protocol Officers Association (PDI-POA) and Meeting Professionals International (MPI).

Ambassador Eric Niehe,
former Ambassador of the Netherlands in Ireland, Hungary and India
During his career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Eric Niehe gained extensive experience with protocol, relationship management and cultural differences.
Eric Niehe is Honorary Member of the Netherlands-India Chamber of Commerce & Trade, Chairman of the Europe India Institute at Nyenrode Business Universiteit, member of the Board Emeritus of the Netherlands India Foundation for Innovation, member of the Committee for International Relations, Association for the Development of Friendship and Understanding and President of the Royal Dutch Rowing Federation.
Ambassador Niehe is a former rower. He represented the Netherlands during the Olympic Games of Mexico in 1968.

Drs. Ing. Jan Bout,
former CEO of Royal Haskoning
Mr Bout was chairman of the Board of Management of Royal Haskoning for nine years until January 1st this year.
During this period he was also responsible for the relationship management. In 2003 he initiated the Royal Haskoning Autumn Dinner Party, now a very susccesful network event for the government and business relations of Royal Haskoninig.
He is now member of the Supervisory Board of Royal Haskoning.
Jan Bout is also a member of the Supervisory Committee of the Deltares Research Institute and has been appointed a member of the Supervisory Board of utility company Delta N.V. and contractors Ballast Nedam N.V. Major Hans van Reenen
Major Hans van Reenen, RNLMC, is a renowned protocol and ceremonial specialist. During his years as Aide-de-Camp to two successive Ministers of Defense, he planned, carried out and supported a wide range of ceremonial and official functions hosted by the Minister of Defense.
In 2009, his expertise, style and attention to detail earned him a special commission by the Secretary-General and Chief of Defense as Ceremonies and Protocol Desk Officer. In this role, he was responsible for preparing a policy document and officiated over various public, extremely high profile ceremonies, including decoration for military valour ceremonies and the Minister of Defense's Change of Office Ceremony. The 92nd edition of the KLM Open is held at the Hilversum Golf Club from 8 to 11 September. Featuring top players such as Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy, this year’s KLM Open has the strongest field ever.

Today the ushers of the Protocolbureau acted at the fashion show of Dutch fashion designer Paul Schulten, who presented his winter collection to 150 guests. The spectacular show was held in the beautiful Amsterdam Okura Hotel and lasted for 30 minutes. Over 40 pieces were showed to his clients, celebrities, sponsors and press. The event ended with a reception in the upstairs lobby of the hotel.
As usual, the guests were seated by the ushers (hosts) of the Protocolbureau.
The ushers welcomed the guests downstairs and handed out seating cards at the registration desk. Upstairs, the ushers assisted the guests in finding their seat. This coordination made a seating possible of 150 guests in 10 minutes.

Protocol is de basis van beide cursussen, maar dan wel de moderne versie hiervan. Het oude protocol, zoals in de loop van eeuwen ontwikkeld door de Europese monarchieën, heeft zich getransformeerd tot een eigentijdse versie van relatiemanagement. Tweedaagse protocolcursus voor professionals
De protocolcursus is bedoeld voor iedereen die in zijn of haar functie regelmatig met protocol te maken heeft zoals protocolmedewerkers en eventmanagers bij (semi-) overheidsinstellingen. Every 4 years, the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) hosts the largest international physical therapy congress. WCPT is the world’s sole international voice for physical therapy, with 101 member organisations representing over 350.000 physical therapists.
Today, the international congress ‘World Physical Therapy 2011’ was officially opened by H.R.H. Princess Margriet of the Netherlands. The WCPT’s 16th international congress is held from 20 to 23 June in the Rai Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam.
The Protocolbureau acted as protocol consultant: preparing the seating arrangements and writing the protocol itinerary. At the official opening the Protocolbureau coordinated the protocol and 5 ushers assisted in welcoming the guests and dignitaries.

Last week, the Protocolbureau organised a relationship meeting for a Dutch enterprise at the head office of Mercedes-Benz Netherlands. This unique location has a reception area, show room, museum and auditorium suitable for up to hundreds of guests.

Five ushers welcomed the guests at the entrance of the head office and escorted them to the host of the event. Many guests were then introduced by the ushers to one of the account managers. Furthermore, account managers were seated next to guests during the symposium and the dinner. During the evening, there was also enough possibility for the guests to meet each other.
At the end, the guests were escorted outside by the ushers who also asked the them about their opinion on the evening.

The involvement of the Protocolbureau had six spearheads:
Organising the relationship meeting: how to see to it that the proper meetings took place?
Composing a guest list: how to make a list with common grounds that also supported the objectives of the meeting?
The invitation route: aiming for the desired attendance.
Briefing/training: how to support the hosts or hostesses?
Orchestrating meetings: how to make sure people will really meet each other?

Prinses Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg bleef er rustig onder waar menig andere bruid misschien in paniek zou zijn geraakt. Op het moment dat de deuren van het kerkje in Bad Berleburg werden geopend en alles en iedereen klaar stond voor het begin van de huwelijksplechtigheid merkte Nathalie dat ze haar bruidsboeket had laten liggen in Schloss Berleburg.

Today the Protocolbureau was at the 'World Press Photo Awards Ceremony' in Muziekgebouw aan het IJ in Amsterdam. The Awards Ceremony is the highlight of a weekend of festivities for the 100 winning photographers.

The international jury of the 54th annual World Press Photo Contest selected a picture by Jodi Bieber from South Africa as the World Press Photo of the Year 2010. In addition, the contest determines winners in the following categories: Spot News, General News, People in the News, Sports Action, Sports Features, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, Portraits, Arts and Entertainment and Nature.

World Press Photo is an independent, non-profit organization based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Founded in 1955 the organization is known for holding the world's largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest.

After the contest, the prizewinning photographs are assembled into a traveling exhibition that is visited by over a million people in 40 countries. A yearbook presenting all prizewinning entries is published annually in six languages.

The welcoming procedures and seating of the 400 guests and dignitaries was a task of the Protocolbureau. Hosts and ushers assisted during the reception of the many international guests. Another task was to identify the sponsors and dignitaries upon arrival and bring them to the host of World Press Photo. The seating was arranged by order of precedence with the winners, dignitaries and sponsors sitting on the first rows.

I once had a supervisor that I liked personally, respected professionally, and got along with just fine. There was only one problem: Every time I received an e-mail from him, I thought he was upset with me. I remember wondering, on numerous occasions, "What did I do now?"

This years lecture was given by Feike Sybesma, CEO of Royal DSM Group. The lecture was followed by a panel discussion with Agnes Jongerius, Anne-Marie Rakhorst and Alexander Pechtold. The gathering ended with a reception.
The Hofstadlezing was first organised in the year 2000. Among the guest speakers of the last 10 years former Dutch Prime-minister Jan-Peter Balkenende, former Belgian Prime-minister Guy Verhofstad, President of the SER Alexander Rinnooy Kan and CEO of Akzo Nobel Hans Wijers.

The Hague, April 4

Tonight the annual "Night of the Stars Gala Dinner" of the Holland America Friendship Foundation was held in the recently opened Louwman Automobile Museum in The Hague. The Night of the Stars was founded by the former ambassador of the United States in the Netherlands, Clifford M. Sobel and his wife Barbara Sobel to support educational and cultural exchange programs between the United States and the Netherlands. And the Night of the Stars celebrates the unique bond that exists between the Netherlands and the United States of America.

The beneficiaries of the Holland America Friendship Foundation are: The Fulbright Program, the John Adams Institute, Humanity in Action Netherlands’s Program, the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute (FERI) and the International Holland Music Session.

The evening featured a reception, followed by an entertainment program in the teatre of the museum and a dinner in the main hall. Fourteen ushers of the Protocolbureau assisted during the evening with welcoming and seating of the 350 guests from political, cultural, social and corporate life from both countries.

Men greeting Men – A handshake is appropriate in most situations. Handshakes tend to be energetic and very often linger through the greeting process and sometimes the entire conversation which may include walking where it is common to continue hold/shake hands. As a show of respect/ deference its is common to grasp the right forearm with your left hand when shaking hands. In casual situations a low hand slap is common. Many men also share a light touching of the side of forehead to the side of the other person’s forehead—first the right side, then the left.

Women greeting Women – A handshake and/or nod of acknowledgment is appropriate in most situations. If you would like to show great respect you may also place your left hand over your right elbow/forearm when handshaking. Many times women will hold hands with other women, and often the handshake is prolonged into this hand-holding. . Close friends or family members usually hug and exchange kisses on the cheek, alternating sides. If you are unsure what to do, just follow the lead of your Rwandan counterpart.
Greetings between Men & Women – Appropriate greetings depend on the nature of the relationship and region. A handshake is usually appropriate but it is best to wait for the woman to extend her hand, otherwise a bow or a nod of acknowledgment will suffice.

Note: It’s a good idea to use your right hand when shaking hands. Shaking hands is expected in business or government meetings.

Virtual Meetings definitely have their challenges. For example, it’s very difficult to get all attendees to actively participate in a virtual meeting. It’s also difficult to read people when you can’t see their facial expressions and body language.
Virtual Meetings will never be easy. However, by following a few simple rules of etiquette, you can get the most out your virtual meetings.

Limit the number of attendees. The more attendees, the more difficult it is to run the meeting. Consider a maximum of 10 attendees for a virtual meeting.
Create an agenda for the virtual meeting and make sure all attendees receive an electronic copy well in advance
Avoid lengthy virtual meetings. By keeping the meeting short and focused with the agenda, you will help avoid the tendency of virtual meeting attendees to multi-task.
Ask attendees to join the meeting on time. When attendees join in late, it becomes a disruption for the attendees already in the meeting.

The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra's yearly gala was held in 'De Doelen' tonight, Rotterdam's main concert hall. Over 1000 guests were present for a concert and a dinner, preceded by a reception. The theme of this year was "Romeo and Juliet".
Guests were welcomed by one of the hosts and ushers of the Protocolbureau, who were also in charge of the seating arrangement and assisted in welcoming the many dignitaries.
The evening started with the reception at 5 pm, followed by the concert at 7 pm and the dinner at 8. The dress code for this evening was, as always, black tie.

In de Protocolmanual van het Protocolbureau staat:
Het vlaggenprotocol is een afspiegeling van de préséance. De vlaggen hangen in dezelfde volgorde. Bij het bepalen van het protocol voor vlaggen gaat men met de rug naar de mast staan. Midden is 1, rechts 2 en links 3. Vlaggen van landen hangen op volgorde van het franse alfabet. Commerciële vlaggen vallen niet onder het protocol. Een vlag wordt alleen gehesen indien de vlag door een persoon vertegenwoordigd wordt. In Nederland is de Nederlandse vlag altijd nummer 1.

Wanneer kan ik de vlag uithangen en wat is de vlaginstructie?

Voor het uithangen van de vlag vanaf rijksgebouwen heeft de minister-president een vlaginstructie vastgesteld. Deze vlaginstructie geldt ook voor lokale overheden. Er wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen 'uitgebreid vlaggen' (UV) en 'beperkt vlaggen' (BV). Bij UV wordt de vlag uitgestoken van alle rijksgebouwen, zoals gebruikelijk is op Koninginnedag. Bij BV hoeft de vlag alleen te worden uitgestoken van de hoofdgebouwen van de ministeries en die van instellingen als de Kamers der Staten-Generaal, de Raad van State, de Algemene Rekenkamer, de Nationale Ombudsman, het Kabinet der Koningin en de Hoge Raad der Nederlanden.

De Nederlandse vlag op rijksgebouwen wordt uitgehangen op de volgende dagen:
31 januari (1 februari): verjaardag Koningin Beatrix (BV);
27 april (28 april): verjaardag Prins Willem-Alexander (BV);
30 april (29 april): Koninginnedag (UV);
4 mei: Dodenherdenking, vlag halfstok, 18.00 uur tot zonsondergang (UV);

Als de dag waarop de vlag wordt uitgestoken op een zondag of christelijke feestdag valt, geldt de datum tussen haakjes.

Uithangen en hijsen van de vlag
Een gehesen vlag mag nooit de grond raken of het verkeer hinderen, ook niet als de vlag halfstok hangt. De vlaggenstok moet dus een goede lengte hebben. Vlaggen mogen niet tussen zonsondergang en zonsopgang worden gehesen of blijven hangen. De vlag mag wel blijven hangen als hij zodanig verlicht is dat de kleuren duidelijk te zien zijn.

De vlag halfstok
Als de vlag halfstok moet hangen, wordt de vlag eerst vol gehesen. Daarna wordt de vlag langzaam en statig neergehaald, totdat het midden van de vlag op de helft van de normale hoogte is gekomen. Hierna wordt de vlaggenlijn vastgebonden. De vlag wordt niet opgebonden. Op Koninginnedag en op verjaardagen van leden van het Koninklijk Huis wordt de vlag met een oranje wimpel gehesen. Bij alle andere gelegenheden wordt er zonder oranje wimpel gevlagd. Bij bijzondere gebeurtenissen in de Koninklijke Familie (zoals geboorte, huwelijk, overlijden), kan er een speciale vlaginstructie afgekondigd worden. Tijdens officiële bezoeken van buitenlandse staatshoofden wordt alleen gevlagd in de plaatsen die worden bezocht.

Sure, many artists and idols in popular culture like Lil Wayne and Travis Barker help make the tattooed look appear cool and unique but they also work in an industry where self-expression is not regulated.
For many people who don’t have the opportunity to work as a professional artist or for a forward thinking tech firm, uniforms, dress code and professional appearance are still part of the corporate workplace dynamic. “Sporting a “sleeve”, an arm full of tattoos, or a scorpion across your neck, may work in some office environments but the majority of corporate cultures still frown on tattoos and piercings,” said Diane Gottsman, owner of The Protocol School of Texas, a company specializing in corporate etiquette training. “When a college student or young adult is interviewing for a job, a tattoo can make an unfavorable impression, even if the impression is not verbalized.”
It is evident that for many young people, factoring career advancement into their decisions to get tattoos is not a priority. It’s testimony to an evolution of the perspective on career, work and life. “Gen Xers began the modern tattoo trend as body art and many were thoughtful about having tattoos that could be easily covered,” said Diane Spiegel, CEO of The End Result, a firm specializing in corporate training and leadership development. Millennials have taken this art form to the next level and view it as an extension of their brand, who they are, what they believe, how they view the world and many are not concerned that there will be any consequences.”

The reason it makes you laugh every time is because we have all had to overcome our own social inadequacies at one point or another; some before an audience and some in close company of family or friends. If you are a person who is always finding your foot in your mouth and making corrective attempts to explain your words or actions, then you may want to familiarize yourself with the rules of social networking etiquette to avoid being the social incompetent and embarrassing your business or brand.

Social networking is a giant monster operated by people communicating and connecting to build relationships and communities in the virtual world. Just as you have to give your neighbors and customers in the real world a certain level of respect and cordiality, a strong online community can only be built on the strongest of moral foundations. With social networking, you don’t have the benefit of face to face contact and you have to be ready to relinquish some control over your image and let your online identity learn to stand on its own.

Today the ushers of the Protocolbureau acted at the fashion show of Dutch fashion designer Paul Schulten, who presented his spring collection to 300 guests. The spectacular show was held in the beautiful Grand Ball Room of the Amsterdam Okura Hotel and lasted for 45 minutes. Over 40 pieces were showed to his clients, celebrities, sponsors and press. The event ended with a reception in the upstairs lobby of the hotel.
As usual, the guests were seated by the ushers (hosts) of the Protocolbureau.
The ushers welcomed the guests downstairs and handed out seating cards at the registration desk. Upstairs, the ushers assisted the guests in finding their seat. This coordination made a seating possible of 300 guests in 10 minutes.

The protocol and hospitality services provided by the protocol officers of the Protocolbureau in the Netherlands (the so called hosts, Junior Partners and Senior Partners) are highly customised to the needs of the clients. This level of customisation requires great creativity, energy, and intellectual capability on the part of the protocol officers as they must perform a myriad of tasks at any particular event ranging from the general organisation and co-ordination of the event to the detailed greeting and escorting of (international) guests and dignitaries. At all events, it is the professionalism and composure of the protocol officers that enhances the atmosphere and ensures events are successes beyond expectations.
We pride ourselves in the attention we pay to the selection, training, and teambuilding of our protocol officers. A host becomes a Junior Partner after having completed our full training programme and gained sufficient operational experience. The title Senior Partners is only given to those with exceptional operational experience. The Protocolbureau has the disposal of 50 protocol officers 75% of whom are men.

The Protocolbureau was established by students of the The Hague Hotel Management School in 1995. Their motive was the need to gain experience in hospitality up to the highest level. They did so by organizing lectures and working as hosts at (business) meetings. The first lecture was delivered by the former Master of Ceremonies of Her Majesty the Queen, and the first assignment was to present the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Awards.

We all know how important networks are in all the different parts of our lives: medical and health, financial and legal, and especially in work and career. What many don't know is that to be successful as a manager and leader you need not one but three networks: operational, developmental, and strategic.

First, of course, is the network of those you and your group need to do your day-to-day work. These are people in other units of the company, and outside, on whom and on whose work you depend to do your work. This is your operational network. Those in it don't work for you but your success depends on them. It also includes those who depend on you and your group to do their work. Though you may not need them, their demands on you can have a big impact on how you spend your time and attention.

Your developmental network is the collection of individuals whom you trust and to whom you can turn for a sympathetic ear, advice (depending on their experience), and a place to discuss and explore professional options. One way or another, these are people who help you grow as a manager and leader.

I wanted to see if I could write an entire post using an iPhone, for some reason, it seemed an interesting way to think about SMS, (the protocol behind text messaging) as a channel communication. I did get the first 250 words ‘penned’ on the device, but failed to complete the task. I wanted to learn more about SMS, both technically and culturally. SMS/texting is a bit Jekyll and Hyde, as it seems to be among the most private form of communication available, yet, at the same time it is extremely social (ask a teenager), there in lies the intrigue. During my journey, the most consistent thing I found, was inconsistency! In my current role with Sword Ciboodle, spending time thinking about intelligence in the contact center consumes a lot of my time – Where does SMS fit? Do you have the answer?

New Delhi, November 08: Lilting tunes wafted across the lush green lawns of the Race Course residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as he hosted a private dinner tonight for US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.
Mahatma Gandhi's favourite bhajan Vaishnav Jan to tene kahiye jay peerh paraaye janney ray played by the Indian Navy and BSF Camels Band was heard with rapt attention by Obama, a self-confessed disciple of the Father of the Nation.
This was followed by the all-time hit from Waqt - O meri zohra jabeen, tujhe maloom nahin.
The US President and first lady were were seated at the head table with Prime Minister Singh, his wife Gursharan Kaur, Sonia Gandhi, Pranab Mukherjee and Rahul Gandhi.
The dinner started with shorba and mulligatawny soups and the main course included dum ki guchhi, jhinga dum nisha, mahi dum anari, ran-e dumpukht, qasr-e pukhtan, subz miloni, chukki gobhi badami, dal dumpukht, murgh yakhni pulao, motia pulao and a variety of Indian breads.
The dessert included kesar phirni, mawa potli and raspberry ganache tart. The catering was from ITC Maurya where the Obamas are staying.
Obama and Michelle went around different tables greeting about 60 guests. They talked and shook hands with the invitees, who also included Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Good morning, My Brothers and Sisters, so began the Presidential Sate of the Nation address in Parliament yesterday, in the presence of the Chief Justice, the Diplomatic Corps and the immediate past President of the Republic. Why were they left out in the salutation?

In affairs of the Sate and on certain important occasions, getting the salutation right is as important as the state herself, especially, in a democratic society when the three arms of government (The Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary) are present at one place in official capacity. Recognition of the three arms of government by each other is critical for the rule of law and democratic accountability. It is also about respecting and acknowledging the authority and the roles of the office (even if not the individual office holder) by each arm of government amongst themselves. I am sure, the President, who is a law professor is in no doubt, aware of this. It is therefore imaginable for a President not to acknowledge and respect the office of the Head of the Judiciary, the Chief Justice at such an august event. I was shocked beyond belief when I listened to the audio of the President’s speech on Joy FM’s website. In fact, what horrified me, was that, some Honourable Members of the House (possibly, the minority) reminded the President of the presence of the Chief Justice and her omission in the salutation but sadly, the President paused for the noise to die down and continued without ameliorating his blunder. I wonder how the Chief Justice felt at that material moment when the President who is the head of the Executive refused to acknowledge her presence, despite being reminded of the presence of the Head of the Judiciary.
