The Prince of Asturias Foundation is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The Foundation has two main purposes: first, to provide a way to link the Prince of Asturias to the principality, and second, to grant awards in recognition of international excellence in the fields of culture, science, and the humanities.
The Foundation was established on 24 September 1980 in Oviedo, the capital of the principality, at a ceremony attended by the Prince of Asturias along with the King and Queen. The first awards were granted in the following year. The awards are given in eight fields: communication and humanities, arts, letters, social sciences, scientific and technical research, international cooperation, sports, and concord, and the Foundation states that candidates should be “outstandingly exemplary and of acknowledged international standing.” The award consists of a cash prize (€50,000), a Joan Miró sculpture commissioned to symbolise the award, a diploma, and an insignia bearing the coat of arms of the Foundation. The laureates must be present at the ceremony in order to receive their awards.
